Maharashtra's APMC traders call-off strike
Traders of APMC market in Maharashtra has called off a strike in evening on Tuesday after the Central government assured them that it will come up with a solution by taking consensus of traders and farmers.
Traders and commission agents of fruits and vegetable markets across the state had gone on strike since this Monday in a move to protest against government's recent amendments to the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act.
"The objective was to ensure that the farmers get a fair price and the consumers get vegetables and fruits at a cheaper rate," First Post reported quoting APMC's additional chief secretary, marketing, Sunil Porwal in Mumbai, as saying.
The state government had recently delisted fruits and vegetables from the APMC, ZeeBiz reported on July 10.
In view of the strike that was just called off, the state government urged farmers to directly bring their produce for sale to Mumbai, cited the First Post report.
Of the 307 APMCs in the state, 219 are operating, while some are closed due to holidays, the news report said.
