The price of non-subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders has been hiked once again by state-run oil marketing companies. This is the sixth consecutive LPG price hike in as many months. The new rates are applicable from today. For those unaware, non-subsidised LPG is the gas that consumers purchase after finishing their quota of 12 gas cylinders of 14.2-kg at rates of about Rs 556.

According to Indian Oil website, a 14.2 kg non-subsidised LPG cylinder is now priced at Rs 858.5 in New Delhi, an increase of Rs 144.5 from its last revision on 1st January. The price in Kolkata has been increased by Rs 149 to Rs 896. In Mumbai, the non-subsidised LPG will cost Rs 829.5 against the earlier price of Rs 145. In Chennai, the price has been hiked by Rs 147 to Rs 881.

The Indian Oil supplies 30 lakh Indane cylinders daily all over India. Indane is delivered to the doorsteps of 11 crore households. The price of LPG depends on two factors - the international benchmark rate of LPG and the exchange rate of US dollar and rupee.

The price is revised every month depending upon the mentioned factors. Since August last year, the price has been increased every month. Also, subsidised cooking gas prices rose by Rs 62 a cylinder or 13 per cent in six months.

In Budget 2020, the government increased the allocation for providing subsidised fuel, especially LPG and kerosene, by 6 pct to Rs 40,915.21 crore for the next fiscal.
