Experts have said that India's present Covid scenario does not warrant restricting international flights or imposing a lockdown, but there is a need for strengthened surveillance and vigilance in view of the rise in cases in some countries.
Covid Guideline: RT-PCR to be mandatory for travelers from 5 countries
In view of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, random coronavirus testing of international arriving passengers has begun at the Delhi airport from Saturday, December 24. The step comes at a time when authorities are taking up measures to prevent possible spread of Coronavirus infection in the country.
Additionally, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that RT-PCR has been made mandatory for passengers coming from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Any passenger from these countries found symptomatic or testing positive for coronavirus would be quarantined, he added.
China is currently hit by the highly transmissible Omicron strain mostly BF.7. It is the main variant spreading in Beijing and is contributing to a wider surge of infections in the country.
BF.7 is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant BA.5 and has the strongest infection ability since it is highly transmissible. It has a shorter incubation period, and has a higher capacity to cause reinfection or infect even those vaccinated.
India had imposed a complete lockdown in March-April 2020 to arrest the spread of Coronavirus.
