Should the government legalise sports betting? Should it pass a law that governs betting in sports? This has been an ongoing discussion for several years now. Minister of State (MoS) for Finance Anurag Thakur has expressed his views on the issue of law and legalisation of betting in sports today.
On a suggestion by Nilesh Shah, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kotak Mahindra AMC to see this as a revenue stream for the government, Thakur said that many countries including Australia and England have legalised betting.
This has helped these countries earn millions in revenues, he said adding that this money could be utilised in sports and other areas.
Thakur also opined that legalising betting would also help to keep match fixing cartels in check and also curb match fixing.
As per Shah, there is a practice of betting and gambling in our society and that is seen in Las Vegas, Macau and Nepal and therefore the government should legalise betting.
Nilesh Shah is also a part time member of the Prime Minister Economic Advisory Council.
