Sometimes searching for customer care numbers of e-commerce website on the internet may land you in trouble, and you may lose your hard-earned money. This is what has happened recently in the national capital where fraudsters through counterfeit websites of popular e-commerce companies posted fake customer care numbers. When someone called for an issue, these people asked the person to share confidential bank details. According to Times of India report, when the police were informed in one such incident they said that fraudsters have flooded the search engines with fake customer care numbers which are being used to dupe scores of people.

The gullible customers who seek a refund are trapped by fraudsters to share their confidential details and thus empty their accounts. In Delhi's Rohini sector 24, one Renu Gupta became victim to such fraud and lost about Rs 52,000. In her case, the man posing as customer care representative of a popular e-commerce portal not only emptied the woman's bank account but also sent her messages, showing the transaction he was making.   

How did it happen?

The hacker reportedly used UPI to hack the victim's bank account and mocked her through WhatsApp messages. 

How to avoid this?

People need to take requisite measures to secure them against such frauds on the internet. 

They must check website URLs properly, besides looking at security certificate of such portals.
