Kulbhushan Jadhav case: In a big triumph for India against Pakistan on the global stage, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has supported its stance over the Jadhav case. Supporting India's stand in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case today, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered the grant to Indian authorities of consular access to him and directed Pakistan military court to suspend and review the death sentence accorded to him. Former MEA Sushma Swaraj called it a great victory for India. She showed great leadership in taking the fight for Jadhav's life on the global stage and getting a verdict favouring India.
Retired Indian Navy officer, Kulbhushan Jadhav was sentenced to death by the Pakistani military court on charges of “espionage and terrorism” in April 2017. The Indian government had moved the ICJ, alleging Pakistan’s “egregious violation” of the provisions of the Vienna Convention by denying it consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav.
India has maintained that Jadhav was kidnapped from Iran where he had business interests after retiring from the Indian Navy.
India also claimed that Pakistan violated the Vienna Convention by denying Consular Access. On the contrary, Pakistan claimed that the Convention guidelines don’t apply to ‘spies’.
Welcoming the ICJ decision, former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took to Twitter to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking Jadhav’s case before the international court.
