To boost cargo movement, Karaikal Port in Tamil Nadu has asked Southern Railway to set up two new railway lines to the port. Setting up railway line will make cargo movement easier. Southern Railway general manager R K Kulshrestha in Karaikal recently said promoter-director of Karaikal Port GRK Reddy requested him to set up Peralam-Karaikal and Thanjavur-Ariyalur railway lines, PTI reported.

"Major chunk of the land required for the Peralam-Karaikal line was already in the possession of Southern Railway," Reddy said. The new line would help generate additional passengers and freight traffic and reduce distance. The Thanjavur-Ariyalur line will benefit cement and other manufacturing industries as well. It will link the region with the port.

Cargo movement at present takes place through Tiruchirapalli and Railways handled 33 million tonnes of cargo and made Rs 1,900 crore as freight revenue through the port since inception, he said.
