Kalank Box Office Collection: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt starrer beats Dilwale, Judwaa 2 opening record, but can he hit Rs 100 cr mark?
Kalank Box Office Collection: After many fans expressed their disappointment, the question has arisen whether Kalank can enter exclusive Rs 100 cr club.
An extended weekend last week made it the best time for the release of Kalank movie. The feel of theatrical drama, exotic clothes, classical musics, the 90s cinematography and the fact that some of the most exciting of Bollywood talent was are starring in the movie, made Kalank a must watch. Kalank has a long list of positives such as Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt and Kunal Khemu. Result was that the opening day worked in favor of Kalank as it became his highest grosser, outrunning the actor’s previous hits like Dilwale, Judwaa 2 and ABCD 2. However, with the second day kicking in, tables turned and audiences were not quite as enthusiastic over the film. Many fans have expressed their disappointment, and now the question has arisen whether Kalank can earmark Rs 100 crore club.
Kalank, which released in some 4,000 screens across the country, has definitely been the talk of Bollywood fandom. On Day 1, the movie ended up bagging a collection of Rs 21.60 crore which did added a feather in Dhawan’s cap. This would be Varun Dhawan’s highest grosser so far. His movies like Dilwale, Judwaa 2, ABCD 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Dishoom and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania have collected some Rs 21 crore, Rs 16.1 crore, Rs 14.3 crore, Rs 12.25 crore, Rs 11.05 crore and Rs 9.02 crore respectively on the first day of release.
But, Kalank soon started to underperform in its box office collection from the second day itself at an unexpected rate. Kalank which released on Wednesday last week (April 17, 2019), collected just Rs 11.45 crore on Thursday, Rs 11.60 crore on Friday and Rs 9.75 crore on Saturday. Taking its overall gross collection to Rs 54.40 crore.
Film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted saying, “#Kalank is clearly underperforming... Dips on Day 4 [Sat]... Trending is weak, so big biz on Day 5 [Sun] is ruled out... Wed 21.60 cr, Thu 11.45 cr, Fri 11.60 cr, Sat 9.75 cr. Total: ₹ 54.40 cr. India biz.”
Adarsh mentioned that, a decline was on the cards, but the drop is much higher than expected during the fall on Day 2.

However, Adarsh also highlights that, Kalank continues its strong run in the international market. From opening day till end of Saturday, overall collection was near Rs 27.43 crore.
Before the release of Kalank, Adarsh gave a two star with rating. He said, “Doesn’t live up to the expectations... Writing, music, length play spoilsport... Few dramatic portions work... Second half engaging in parts... Good climax... Varun, Alia, Madhuri, Aditya, Kunal Kemmu top notch. #KalankReview.” The collections reflects that disappointing rating.
The movie Kalank is the widest release of Bhatt and Dhawan. It has been released on 5,300 screens worldwide and has a budget of Rs 150 crore.
The movie showcases a complicated love story going way back to 1945. It’s a sad saga where a girl Roop played by Alia Bhatt is attracted to Zafar acted by Varun Dhawan.
Considering the slow trend in box collection at domestic front, it would be quite interesting to see how far Kalank can go. But one can expect the collection to be over Rs 100 crore taking worldwide screenings as well.
