The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has conducted a study in Chennai that reveals that the COVID-19 Delta variant has the potential to infect both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
News agency ANI tweeted about this recent development of ICMR. In the tweet ANI stated, "An ICMR study conducted in Chennai has found that the Delta variant has the potential to infect both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, but it reduces mortality among the former group."

According to an ANI report on August 17, 2021, ten new cases of Delta plus variant of COVID-19 was detected in Maharashtra, the state health department informed. The five of these cases were reported from Kolhapur, three from Ratnagiri and one from Sindhudurg. This took the total tally of COVID-19 Delta plus variant cases in Maharashtra to 76.
The state health department also informed ANI that five of these 76 patients have died.
Speaking of the current COVID-19 situation in the country, as per the data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on August 18, 2021, India reported 35,178 new cases in last 24 hours. The recovery rate stood at 97.52 per cent which is the highest since March 2020.
In addition to that, the India’s Cumulative COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage crossed 56.57 crore, as per the data from MoHFW. So far, more than 22.53 Cr Vaccine doses administered in the age group between 18 and 44 years. Till 7 PM on Wednesday, more than 48.81 lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered.
