IPL 2020: This Chennai Super Kings star likely to announcement retirement from all forms of cricket

IPL 2020: Former Australian all-rounder and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener, Shane Watson has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Monday. The 39-year-old is yet to announce the decision formally but has apparently taken the final call. Watson had a below par season by his standards and decided to hang his boots after CSK’s final IPL 2020 match against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday in Abu Dhabi, which the Yellow Army won by nine wickets. 

“Watson will officially announce in a day or two, maybe after talking to his family,” a source close to the franchisee told The Indian Express. 

Shane Watson had retired from international cricket after winning the ODI World Cup with the Australian side in 2015. He has been no less than an IPL legend, scoring big for different franchises. Watson was the man of the tournament in the inaugural season of the IPL which saw Rajasthan Royals lift the cup.  

He was bought by CSK two years ago and played a vital role in the Chennai-based franchise’s fourth IPL title win in 2018 with a century in the final. Watson had scored a century in the final of that season, single-handedly winning the game for the side. The following year, he came very close of pulling off another heist in the final against Mumbai Indians. Watson scored 80 – more than half runs for his side – in the final, batting with a major injury in his leg.  

In total, he has scored 3874 runs and picked up 92 wickets in 145 IPL matches. 

Watson, who has played 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20s at the international level, has won the ICC World Cup with Australia twice, in 2007 and in 2015. In Tests, Watson scored 3731 runs and picked up 75 wickets, and scored 5757 runs and scalped 168 wickets in ODIs to finish his career as one of the leading all-rounders of his era.
