Indian Railways plans to replace medical booklet cards with credit card-like plastic health cards carrying a unique pan-India number for its employees and pensioners, reports ET.com. Presently the railways issues a medical card in the form of a booklet which is difficult to maintain.
According to the report, persons dependent to the employee or pensioner will also get a separate medical identity card, which would have a unique all India number.
According to an order by the railway board, "for bringing uniformity in the medical identity cards issued to employees and other beneficiaries of Indian Railways, the board has approved that the card should be a plastic-based card, the size of which should be same as that of debit/credit cards issued by banks."
The report also stated that on top of the medical card there would be coloured strip for identification of the type of category. This strip colour would also help identify the type of the cardholder- serving, retired employees or dependents.
The card would be issued to beneficiaries upto 15 years of age with a validity of 5 years. After that, the same card would be renewed. The beneficiaries who are above the age of 15 years have to renew their card once they turn 40 years and again once they retire.
