With opposition parties across political divides joining hands to oppose sugar import from Pakistan, traders said they would not sell or import the item from the neighboring country. The Bombay Sugar Merchants Association has issued a letter asking members to refrain from importing or selling sugar from Pakistan.

Congress leader and ex-CM Ashok Chavan questioned the government’s decision to import sugar from Pakistan even when India produced 320 metric tonnes of sugarcane. While MNS Navi Mumbai chief held a protest at the Vashi agricultural produce market committee and burnt Pakistani flags, NCP leaders ransacked a sugar godown at Dahisar Mori. Leader of the opposition Dhananjay Munde said how could the people of India consume sugar from Pakistan at a time when our soldiers were losing their lives at the border.
