India Lockdown News Today 2021: The recent surge in the number of COVID-19 cases all over the country has forced the state governments to reinforce stringent measures to control the spread of the disease. At a time when India is witnessing more than three lakh fresh infections every day, there are questions in the minds of the people whether a total lockdown will be imposed yet again.

While speaking to India Today, Dr Giridhar Babu, Professor and Head, Lifecourse Epidemiology, PHFI, Bengaluru said that complete lockdown is not an option and instead one needs to understand the dynamics of disease transmission. He said, "We need to see what the epicentres are. For example, it’s Bengaluru in Karnataka. Locking down the state may not be justified. We’re failing in containment. Lockdown is necessary at the city level, at the district level facing high transmissions. Especially where people can’t get critical care." He further added that at present it will be convenient to look at reducing the numbers in order to unburden the healthcare system. Lockdown only reduces the speed and if the cases are not being detected well then, a total lockdown will be of no help.

In order to curb the rapid spread of the infection, various states including the national capital have decided to impose lockdowns. Initially, the Delhi government imposed lockdown in the union territory from April 19, 2021, to April 26, 2021. Again, it has been extended till May 3, 2021. Other states like Karnataka, Rajasthan have also entered into a lockdown.

While speaking about his idea on complete lockdown, Dr. Vishal Rao, Member, Expert Committee, COVID Task Force, Govt of Karnataka, Bengaluru, said that lockdown helps all to prepare and lockdown itself requires planning and preparations. He also highlighted the fact that the vaccination drive may suffer in case of a total lockdown.

Last week, the central government has announced that the vaccination drive for everyone above 18 years of age will begin from May 1, 2021. The registration process for the COVID-19 vaccination drive is set to start from today at CoWin portal.
