The Indian Meteorological Department in a weather forecast has issued an Orange alert for Navi Mumbai and Thane area, while Yellow alert for the Mumbai region on Wednesday.

The IMD expects intense spells of rain very likely to occur at isolated places in Navi Mumbai and Thane regions, whereas Mumbai would witness moderate to intense spells of rain very likely to occur at isolated places, the weather department said in a statement.

Mumbai region earlier was placed in the Orange alert category from Wednesday to Friday, however, has been downgraded to Yellow expecting low spells as compared to neighbouring districts.

The incessant rains in Mumbai and neighbouring districts have created havoc since July 18, as waterlogging and landslides incidents have been reported from various locations.

Besides Thane, the neighbouring areas such as Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and Badlapur too witnessed heavy showers on Wednesday morning and is predicted more spells in a day.

In a Tuesday’s weather update, IMD has estimated a 'very likely' probability of ‘extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in five districts - Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur and Satara.

According to a news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), 33 deaths due to rain-related incidents in Mumbai has been reported alone on July 17-18, 2021. Moreover, at least 22 people were killed and several others were injured in separate landslide incidents in Chembur and Vikhroli last weekend.

Due to continuous showers, the coronavirus vaccination drive in the Mumbai area and neighbouring parts have been stalled. IMD in weather forecast predicted that the rains to continue in Goa, Konkan and Central Maharashtra division at least till July 24, 2021.
