Delhi's transport department has issued a draft notification for new retention policy, making an amendment in the Rules 34 A of  Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules. Under this new provision, you will not be allowed to retain your favourite number on your new vehicle without paying a fee. The vehicle owner has to pay the charges from Rs 2500 to Rs 50,000.

The new policy will be implemented after receiving suggestions and objections within 30 days, said a Hindustan report. Citing sources, the report said that the new retention policy can be implemented by the last week of November.

So far, there is no fee to retain the old number and transfer it on to the new vehicle, even if for the most exclusive VIP number 0001. But this policy will no longer exist, as the vehicle owners of 4-wheel vehicles have to pay a minimum fee of Rs 25,000 and 2-wheel ones Rs 2500. If that number belongs to the VIP series, the owner will have to pay 10% of the reserved price of Rs 25,000, whichever is greater.

If someone holds a VIP number of 0001, he/she will have to pay minimum Rs 50,000 because the reserved price for the VIP number is Rs 5 lakh. Similarly, if the number is of between 0002 and 0003, one has to pay Rs 30,000.

This new retention policy is being introduced because the Delhi Transport Department witnessed that some people are purchasing old vehicles with VIP numbers and getting those transferred on their new vehicles. As per new policy, this can done only if the owner has that vehicles registered in his/her name for the past three years.

In the recent past, the matter related to old VIP numbers being transferred on the new vehicles came to fore.
