Whether this is due to rising wealth trends, inability to bear stoppages en route or a combination of both, but Indians are increasingly preferring flying than taking to the road or Railways. The Airports Authority India (AAI) released the air traffic movement for the month of April 2018, under which total passengers traffic at all Indian airports in the month of April, 2018 was 28.22 million indicating growth was up a whopping 21.7% over the corresponding month of previous year. Growth in International passengers traffic and Domestic passengers traffic for the month of April 2018 was 10.2% and 25.0% respectively
Meanwhile, total aircraft movements at all Indian airports were 208.19 thousand (excluding General Aviation Movements). This was a rise of 18.1% over the corresponding month of previous year. Growth in International aircraft movements and Domestic aircraft movements for the month of April 2018, was 5.8% and 21.1% respectively.
During the same month, total freight at all Indian airports was 284.33 thousand MT. Such was growth of 6.1% over the corresponding month of previous year. Growth in International freight and Domestic freight for the month of April 2018 was 4.6% and 9.0% respectively.
Under this data, it was revealed that smaller towns which benefited from the regional connectivity scheme of the government have now begun contributing to the overall growth passenger traffic growth.
Places like Shillong, Shimla, Bhatinda, Ludhiana, Bhuntar, Pathankot, Mysore, Salem were the ones who witnessed good number of passenger traffic movement in April as against a year ago same period.
