High tidal waves hit Mumbai as Cyclone Biparjoy turns into 'extremely severe cyclonic storm': Latest updates

Cyclone Biparjoy, which is located over the east-central Arabian Sea, has intensified into an ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’ and moving north-eastward at a high speed, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It is expected to continue its movement and is likely to cross between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi, Pakistan, by noon of June 15, the weather agency predicted.

“The cyclone intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Sunday morning. The exact place of its landfall will be clearer in the coming days,” a senior scientist at the IMD, DS Pai, told PTI.

Cyclone Biparjoy impact on Maharashtra

Due to the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy, Mumbai witnessed high tidal waves on Monday. The cyclone is moving directly parallel to Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, and its impact is likely to be seen in many parts of Maharashtra.

The weather agency has also advised a total suspension of fishing operations in the region until June 15 and has asked fishermen not to venture into the Arabian Sea or the north Arabian Sea from June 12–15. With Cyclone Biparjoy passing off the coast of Mumbai, flight operations at the city airport were affected on Sunday. The evening arrival and departure were delayed by an average of 40 minutes, according to reports.

Cyclone Biparjoy Gujarat updates

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday morning issued an orange alert for the Saurashtra-Kutch coast. According to IMD, Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to cross near Jakhau port in Kutch district by noon on June 15.

Cyclone Biparjoy Kerala updates

The weather forecaster has predicted rain in Kerala for the next 5 days. A yellow alert was issued for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts on June 11. The IMD also issued a yellow alert for Kannur and Kozhikode districts for June 12.

Cyclone Biparjoy impact on Pakistan

Due to the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy Pakistan’s northwest region was impacted by heavy rain on Sunday, which left at least 25 people dead and 145 injured, news agency PTI reported. Several houses also collapsed due to the heavy rain.

Meanwhile, IMD issued a yellow alert on Sunday predicting Cyclone Biparjoy to cross between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi, Pakistan by noon on June 15.

According to reports, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to remain prepared with all emergency measures for Cyclone Biparjoy, which is likely to impact Karachi and adjoining areas in Sindh province.
