The Haryana Education Minister Kanwar Pal in a tweet today said, "The schools will remain closed on account of summer holidays from April 22 to May 31." Due to the sharp rise in the number of COVID-19 cases across the country, the state governments are adopting various measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 infection.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck the country last year, the schools and other educational institutions were closed all over the country and the students shifted to the digital platform for online classes. As situation normalised, the schools were reopened in a phased manner. However, the recent spike in the number of COVID-19 cases have once again compelled the authorities to close down schools.

Earlier this month, the Haryana government closed down the schools for students up to class 8 till April 30, 2021. However, later the schools were closed for all classes due to the rapid increase in the number of coronavirus cases. Though the schools were closed, the teachers were attending schools on a regular basis for preparing the exam results. Regarding this, the Haryana Education Minister said, "Teachers have been regularly coming to schools. Along with the safety of the children, safety of the teachers is also our responsibility, so the summer vacations have been declared in advance."

Earlier, West Bengal had also declared the summer vacation in advance for the government schools in the state due to the adverse COVID-19 scenario in the state. On April 19, 2021, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said, "All the state government-run schools to remain closed from tomorrow till further notice. Early Summer vacation has been announced, in view of the surge in #COVID19 cases."

Speaking of the COVID-19 situation in the state of Haryana, the state has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of cases over the last few weeks. On April 20, the state recorded 7,811 new cases in its biggest single-day spike so far, while 35 people had succumbed to the disease.
