Har Ghar Tiranga campaign kicks off today: Amit Shah, others hoist tricolour

Union Home Minister AMit Shah hoisted the national flag along with his wife Sonal Shah at his residence today as the "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign kicked off today, August 12, 2022.

Shah also called upon the citizens to proudly hoist the national flag on their houses to celebrate the independence day.

The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has been launched as part of 75 years of Independence - under the "Aazadi ka Amrit Mahotsav".

Meanwhile, On Friday, the second leg of the Great Indian Run was flagged-off from Saini Bhawan, G.T. Road, Ambala on Friday.

The run celebrates the 75th Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the `Har Ghar Tiranga` campaign. The run builds on the success of the first chapter of the Great India Run held in 2016. The relay-run will cover 829 kilometers across 4 states from Srinagar to New Delhi from August 5 to August 15.

The Flag-off in Ambala was done by former cabinet minister Venod Sharma, Mayor Ambala Shakti Rani Sharma and Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma.

In Delhi, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday distributed the national flags among the students at a government school in Delhi, saying the tricolour represents aspirations of the people of India and "we must work to keep its pride intact".

It must be noted that the Department of Posts has sold more than 1 crore national flags in 10 days through its 1.5 lakh post offices spread across the country, an official statement said on Thursday.

The postal department is selling flags for Rs 25 apiece.

"Department of Posts (DoP) with its omnipresent network of 1.5 lakh post offices, has taken 'Har Ghar Tiranga' programme to every citizen of the country. Within a short span of 10 days, India Post has sold more than 1 crore national flags, through post offices as well as online, to citizens," the statement said.

Recently, to allow each citizen to hoist the national flag in their house, the Indian government had amended the Flag code of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also urged the citizens to use the 'Tiranga' as their profile picture on social media accounts between August 2 to 15.

Earlier, citizens were not allowed to hoist the flag on their houses at all times; they were only able to do so on select occasions.

But after the decade long legal battle fought by industrialist Naveen Jindal, the Supreme COurt in 2004 had said that Right to fly the national flag with dignity and honour was indeed a part of article 19 (1) (A) of Indian constitution. ​
