The significance of Pongal
This festival is dedicated to Lord Surya, or the Sun God. On Pongal, devotees cook newly harvested rice with milk and jaggery in a new clay pot. People spilled milk all over the pot during the cooking. It is seen as a symbol of wealth and abundance. Pongal is made by topping this combination with brown sugar, ghee, cashew nuts, and raisins. Devotees present the Pongal to the Sun God and then feed it to their entire family on banana leaves.
