Govt generates over Rs 80,000 from cess charges in FY16
Minister of finance announced on Monday that the total amount of money generated from Education Cess, Swachh Bharat Cess and all other surcharges was Rs 81,008.47 during FY16.
This was higher than the revenue generated in 2014-15 which amounted to Rs 74,801.41 by these taxes.
This information was provided by the Minister of State in the Ministry of finance, Santosh Kumar Gangwar in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
“The details of expenditure made out of all cesses and surcharges so collected under different heads is not centrally maintained,” the minister said in a statement.
The details of revenue generated out of Education Cess, Swachh Bharat Cess, Other cess and Surcharges as is under:
Education cess saw a decline in revenue generation from Rs 36,178.50 in FY15 to Rs 28,023.03 in FY16.
The Education Cess is a tax in India ordered to help cover the costs of government-sponsored programs.
The Swachh Bharat Cess which was launched in 2015 with the objective of financing and promoting Swachh Bharat initiatives, generated a total of Rs 3,925.74 in FY16.
On being asked about the revenue generation from Krishi Kalyan Cess the government stated that the cess would be effective from 2016-17.
