Government appoints 31 members in two tribunals - 18 members in NCLT, 13 in ITAT; move to fastrack cases, appeals

The government has appointed 31 people as judicial, technical and accountant members at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). The NCLT deals with matters mainly related to companies law and insolvency law while the ITAT deals with income tax matters.
As many as 8 judicial and 10 technical members have been appointed to the NCLT according to a communication issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on September 11 based on decisions taken by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet.

The move is expected to expedite the cases in the NCLT as the me cases as 18 new members take charge of the quasi judicial body. The pay scale for the aforementioned posts in the NCLT is between Rs 67,000 and Rs 79,000 (pre-revised) as per this communication. This is for a period of 5 years or till the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier, this communication said.
Meanwhile, 6 judicial and 7 accountant members have been appointed to the ITAT according to separate communications issued by the DoPT on September 11 based on decisions taken by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet.
The appointments have come in the wake of the Supreme Court nudging to the Government on the positions lying vacant in the tribunals and also expressing its displeasure over the issue.
Andhra High Court Judge Justice Telaprolu Rajani, Bombay High Court Retired (Rtd) Judge Justice Pradeep Narhari Deshmukh, Madras High Court Retd Judge Justice S Ramathilagam and District Court Judge Deep Chandra Joshi are among those appointed as the judicial members to the NCLT.
Others are DRT-3, Delhi, Presiding Officer Dharminder Singh, Punjab and Haryana High Court Retd Registrar General Harnam Singh Thakur, Principal District Court, Salem (Tamil Nadu) Retd District Court Judge P Mohan Raj and Advocate Rohit Kapoor.
The newly-appointed technical members include Principal Commissioner of Income Tax Ajai Das Mehrotra, Retd NHPC CMD Balraj Joshi, Retd Ministry of Panchayati Raj Secretary Rahul Prasad Bhatnagar, Retd Principal Director General of Income Tax Subrata Kumar Dash, Retd Department of Consumer Affairs Secretary Avinash K Srivastava and Retd SBI Chief General Manager Shree Prakash Singh.
Other technical members are Chartered Accountant Sameer Kakar, Retd Director General of Income Tax Manoj Kumar Dubey, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Kaushalendra Kumar Singh and Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Anuradha Sanjay Bhatia.
Six judicial members have been appointed to the ITAT. They are Advocates Sonjoy Sarma, S Seethalakshmi and T R Senthil Kumar, Additional District & Sessions Judges Shatin Goyal and Anubhav Sharma, and Law Officer in SBI Manomohan Das.
Besides, there are seven accountant members. They are Chartered Accountants Bhagirath Mal Biyani, Balakrishnan S, Jamiappa Dattatraya Battuli, Padmavathy S, Arun Khodpia, Rathod Kamlesh Jayantbhai, and Commissioner of Income Tax Ripote Dipak Pandurang.
