G20 Summit 2023: Organising a high-calibre event like the G20 summit is a costly affair. Right from building infrastructure to hospitality to the beautification of the city, expenditures are sky high. For the preparations of G20 Summit, which is scheduled to be held in New Delhi from September 9–10, the Indian government is leaving no stone unturned. After all, leaders as prominent as US President Joe Biden, UK PM Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron, are going to be part of the event. It's rare that leaders of such prominence stay in India simultaneously.
The government has already made a lot of preparations, and a lot of money will be spent once the main event starts.
ZeeBiz takes you through some of the expenditures that have been made to make the event a success.
Bharat Mandapam
The G20 Summit will be organised at the Bharat Mandapam, situated at the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) complex, Pragati Maidan, in the Capital.
A total of Rs 2,700 crore has been spent on the construction and beautification of the venue.
Beautification of New Delhi
New Delhi often hosts high-profile events and has one of the best infrastructures in the country.
But, focusing on the G20 Summit, the central government has spent as much as Rs 4,064 crore on the beautification of the city.
As many as 125 fountains and 70 large statues have been installed in various parts of the city.
The expenditure also includes money spent to bring 1 lakh flower plants from eight countries. Just for Delhi, 2,000 trees and 43 lakh plants have also been brought from across the world.
Money spent by MCD, NDMC
While the New Delhi Municipal Corporation spent Rs 60 crore, Public Works Department spent Rs 45 crore, and the Delhi Development Authority spent Rs 18 crore for the beautification of New Delhi.
Road from IGI Airport to Pragati Maidan
The government has spent a huge amount of Rs 22 crore to give international look to the road from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Pragati Maidan.
Hotel expenditures
World leaders attending the G20 summit in New Delhi will stay in 25 hotels. The Chanakya Suite at ITC Maurya, where Biden is staying, will be the costliest of all as it will cost Rs 8 lakh in total.
Security expenditure
Though there is no estimate available for money that will be spent on security, it will presumably come at a high cost.
The government has arranged a 3-layer security system for the G20 summit.
The first layer of security will be provided by the respective security agencies from the participating countries.
The Indian security agencies will provide the second layer of security.
The third layer will be of the Delhi Police, which will be on high alert all the time outside the hotels of participating dignitaries.
