Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was on Thursday admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the national capital after his health reportedly deteriorated. Singh, 92, was brought to the AIIMS emergency department around 8 pm and the reason behind his hospitalisation was not immediately known.

Indian National Congress (INC) MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached the hospital amid tightened security in the presence of some of the top Delhi Police officers.

Authorities restricted public entry into the hospital, according to sources.  

Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Parliament Rahul Gandhi would be travelling back to Delhi, party leaders said.

Other Congress leaders also started arriving at the hospital.  

All of the Grand Old Party's rallies and meetings scheduled for Friday stood canceled.

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) national president and Union Health Minister JP Nadda also arrived at AIIMS. 

Manmohan Singh shot to prominence as the country's Finance Minister in the government headed by PV Narasimha Rao during 1991-96, having brought in sweeping reforms that transformed the economy.

As the two-term Prime Minister of the UPA, he stayed at the top post from 2004 and 2014, and served as a member of the Rajya Sabha till early this year.

In his political career, Singh has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 1991, where he was Leader of the Opposition between 1998 and 2004.

Manmohan Singh was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 22 after the 2004 general elections and took the oath of office for a second term in May 2009.
