Dairy farmers can now earn more by selling cow urine! Yes, you read that right. Dairy farmers in Rajasthan are selling urine of high breed cows, such as Gir and Tharparkar, at Rs15- Rs30 per litre in the wholesale market even as a litre of cow milk is sold at a price between Rs 22 and Rs 25.

Cow urine is sold to the people who are into organic farming which is used by them as an alternative to pesticides. Also, people use cow urine for medicinal purposes and in rituals too. A person named Kailesh Gujjar, from Jaipur said that he is earning around 30% more after he started selling cow urine, reports Economic Times .

Another milk trader has started buying cow urine from a Gir cowshed in Jaipur. "I sell one litre of cow urine between Rs 30 and Rs 50. The demand for urine is high among organic farmers who use it as an alternative to pesticides. They sprinkle cow urine on crops to prevent insect attacks," says the trader.

“Many people use cow urine in rituals like ‘yagna’ and ‘panchgavyam’ during ‘janaau’ ceremony," he told ET.

Notably, 300-500 litres of cow urine every month is used by the government-run Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology in Udaipur in its organic farming. The university has tied up with dairy farmers for the supply of cow urine. Cow urine worth Rs 15,000- Rs 20,000 is being purchased by the university. Vice-chancellor Uma Shankar said, "Cow urine has the potential to provide additional income to farmers.” 

There are around 8,58,960 cows in 2,562 state-run shelters in Rajasthan.
