Food labelling rules for online food delivery platforms like Zomato, Swiggy changed from today; compliance failure to invite action

FSSAI Food Labeling Rules: In order to provide better information to the customers, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked e-commerce companies like Zomato, Swiggy etc. to follow the food labeling rule from July 1, 2022. Under this, the companies will have to provide additional information on the packet. Zee Business Ambrish Pandey's report.
According to the rules, these companies will now have to ensure that the restaurant/hotel whose food they are delivering, has complete information related to Nutritional Content, Calorie Value and Allergic Content.
Inoshi Sharma, Executive Director at FSSAI, said that e-commerce platforms like Zomato, Swiggy will be required to provide information related to calories, nutrition and allergies present in food on all platforms including their mobile apps. Failure to do so may result in action being taken against the company concerned, she added.
She informed that the labeling and display rule came into force in the year 2020. At that time, FSSAI had implemented the rule for all the big players of the market like hotels or restaurants which have more than 10 branches. Whereas the rule was applicable for big shopkeepers in January.
Now from July 1, the food labeling rule has been implemented for e-commerce platforms like Zomato, Swiggy as well.
