Even you have availed do not disturb (DND) service to avoid these kinds of calls and messages it is not of much use. But now the government is planning to take action against these kinds of telemarketing calls and messages.

The central government has prepared a draft along with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) which when changed into rules will make the rules more strict for telemarketing.

According to the new guidelines any operator will have to register itself with DoT and only the registered operator will be able to call or message people. The number of these calls and messages will also be limited.

 

If any operator will break this rule then it will have to pay a huge fine. According to DoT if an operator breaks the rule 10 times, then a fine of Rs 1000 per call and message will be charged.

Similarly, if the rule is broken between 10 to 50 times, then a fine of Rs 5,000 per call and message will be charged while for more than 50 times a fine of Rs 10,000 per call and message will be charged.

In 2018 DoT made a rule block chain under which it had also created two special wings called Digital intelligence Unit (DIU) and Telecom Analytics. Both of these units will not only keep an eye on these calls but will also protect users.

DIU will send a system-generated message for the verification of doubtful calls. If the number does not get verified, then it will get discontinued. The IMEI numbers will also be included into the grey list by DIU. After this, no calls or messages can be done using the grey listed number for 30 days.

However, if the caller will use a new device for telemarketing, then the IMEI numbers of the new device will also be added to the grey list, and it will remain in the list until the system will complete its reverification process.

DoT has prepared these guidelines in 2018 and all the stakeholders and people were asked for their reviews on the same. In 2020 the guideline was supposed to be accepted however due to the pandemic the process got delayed.
