The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has released a guideline recently for the usage of the anti-COVID drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG). The 2DG medicine can be given to COVID-19 patients under the care and prescription of doctors. The DRDO has released directions for the usage of this drug for COVID-19 patients as per DCGI approval.

DRDO anti-Covid drug 2-DG's price has been kept at Rs 990 per sachet by Dr. Reddy’s lab. Government hospitals, central and state governments would be provided with the medicine at a discounted price, the government officials have announced. Here are the new guidelines by the DRDO, who can use the medicines, after doctors’ recommendation.

Who Are Prescribed to Use? 

  • The 2-DG drug is an adjunct therapy to the standard of care in the treatment of COVID patients in the hospital setting.  
  • Ideally, 2DC should be prescribed as early as possible by doctors for moderate to severe COVID patients for a maximum duration of up to 10 days.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, severe cardiac problem, ARDS, severe hepatic and renal impairment patients have not been studied yet with 2DG; hence caution should be exercised. 
  • 2DG should not be given to pregnant and lactating women and patients below 18 years. 

The medicine was developed at the DRDO lab at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), New Delhi, in collaboration with Hyderabad-based pharma company Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL). Patients are advised to request their hospital to contact Dr. Reddy's Lab, Hyderabad for medicine supply.
