1. The DRDO 2DG Covid-19 oral drug has been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for emergency use as an adjunct therapy in moderate to severe coronavirus patients.
2. The clinical trials of the medicine called 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) had shown that it helped in faster recovery of hospitalised patients and also reduced supplemental oxygen dependence.
3. The 2-DG will come in powder form in the sachet and will be taken orally by dissolving it in water.
4. As per a statement by the Defence Ministry, the drug accumulates in the virus-infected cells and prevents the growth of the virus by stopping viral synthesis and energy production. It added that the medicine's selective accumulation in virally infected cells makes it unique.
5. Talking about the efficacy trends, patients treated with 2-DG showed a faster symptomatic cure than the standard of care (SoC) on various endpoints.
The approval of the drug has come at a time when India is fighting a record-breaking wave of the coronavirus pandemic that has not only stretched the country’s healthcare infrastructure to its limit but has also taken the lives of many.
