DigiGaon offer: 2GB data priced at Rs 25 for 15 days; here is latest village to go digital

A small village 6 km away from the main highway, connected by a single-lane road with farmlands on both sides was the centre of attraction on Sunday. It has become the sixth village in India to be connected digitally.

A WiFi choupal has been set up by Common Service Center (CSC) which will enable people to surf the internet at Rs 25 with 2GB data for 15 days. A sanitary pad unit run by village women to digital literacy to an LED bulb factory, the village surrounded by Greater Noida Expressway which boasts of highrise buildings, has created entrepreneurs and generated employment through various programmes run by the CSCs, under the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

The WiFi initiative was launched by the Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday.

Until now, CSCs have been set up in 1.8 lakh gram panchayats and will spread to 2.50 lakh gram panchayats by the year-end. In all, as many as 2.91 CSCs operate in the country today. “About 700 digital villages will be established by the end of this year,” Prasad said.

Youngsters seemed to be excited about the start of WiFi services in the village, where the network of many private mobile players was patchy.

CSC E-governance Services CEO Dinesh Tyagi said that the internet coupon rates start from Rs 5 and go up to Rs 100, with a maximum limit of Rs 900 with different validity and data limits. About 1,500 families reside in the village and every home has a smartphone through which, they will be able to access WiFi. About 12 hotspots have been set up across the village. CSC has also set up FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) connections in a few homes.
