The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) clarified on Wednesday that media reports published quoting UIDAI’s Counsel Shri Rakesh Dwivedi’s argument in the Supreme Court on Tuesday that Google is trying to fail Aadhaar, are not correct.

Shri Rakesh Dwivedi, Senior Advocate for UIADI had submitted that as far as Google, Facebook and Twitter are concerned, they cannot be compared with Aadhaar due to the nature of information being different and also due to difference in the nature of algorithms being used. While Aadhaar is only matching biometrics, the other global companies are using learning tools for analysis of data which creates knowledge.

Further, UIDAI is prohibited under the law to do any such analysis and therefore cannot result in surveillance of any kind. He further said that UIDAI does not permit any Requesting Entity (RE) to collect and analyze Aadhaar data and use the same for any commercial use.

It is only a certain section of people who are trying to fail Aadhaar by creating imaginary fear that such data analytics and learning tools used in the above companies might be used by UIDAI in future, which is completely unfounded.

Dwivedi had told a CJI-headed Constitution bench, “If Aadhaar succeeds, smart cards will be out of business. Google does not want it. Smart card lobby does not want Aadhaar to succeed.”
