Delhi witnessed a peak in power demand, clocking at 7,717 MW on Tuesday, May 21, making it the highest ever in the history of the national capital, according to data received by the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), Delhi.
According to SLDC, on Monday, May 20, Delhi already peaked in power demand, clocking at 7,572 MW in the afternoon, which is the highest ever recorded in May, breaking the previous year's record of power demand at 7438 MW.
However, hours later, at 11:37 pm on the same day, Delhi again peaked its power demand, clocking at 7,591 MW. Previously, Delhi had recorded its all-time high peak power demand on June 29, 2022, clocking at 7,695 MW.
It is the fourth day in a row that Delhi’s peak power demand crossed 7000 MW this year. Last year, in 2023, the peak power demand was recorded at 7,438 MW on August 22.
It is expected that the city's peak power demand can cross the 8,000-MW mark this summer due to the rise in temperature and heat.
This trend in increased power consumption has been visible since April. This year in April, Delhi's maximum electricity consumption ranged between 3,809 MW and 5,447 MW, compared to the peak power consumption, which ranged from 3,388 MW to 5,422 MW, in April 2023.
