Delhi's peak power demand records new high of 8,647 MW as heatwave conditions continue
Before this, the previous highest peak power demand in Delhi was 8,302 MW on May 29 of this year.
Power demand in Delhi today: Due to the constant heat wave and rising temperatures, the power supply demand in Delhi surpassed the older demand on Tuesday at 3:22 PM, with an all-time high of 8647 megawatt (MW), the highest ever for the city, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), Delhi.
Before this, the previous highest peak power demand in Delhi was 8,302 MW on May 29 of this year.
The city recorded a peak power supply demand of 8000 MW for the first time on May 22, 2024.
Since then, it can be seen that Delhi’s peak power demand has crossed 8000 MW eight times, the discom official said.
Power demand in the nation's capital has surged at an unprecedented rate due to the cooling load caused by the increasing usage of air conditioners and coolers during the unbearable heat wave.
"The power demand can be attributed to weather conditions that led residents to use more air conditioning and cooling appliances, pushing electricity consumption. It is estimated that air conditioning can contribute to 30–50 percent of domestic and commercial power consumption," said a discom official.
Last year, the peak power demand was recorded at 7438 MW on August 22.
Amid the ongoing electricity and water-related problems, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) successfully met the peak power demand in their respective areas.
The minimum temperature of the city on Tuesday was 33.8 degrees Celsius, whereas the maximum temperature was around 45 degrees Celsius, the weather department officials said.
