Usually, the air quality worsens in Delhi with the onset of the winter season. Stubble burning by farmers of neighbouring states is considered to be the main reason behind this. This is why the national capital is at the top of the list of the most polluted capital cities in the world.

The data, which takes into account the air quality till November 2022, was released on November 14.

Meanwhile, a layer of smog covered the city today. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the air quality in Delhi plunged into the ‘Poor’ category. Overall AQI stood at 249.

It is to be noted that an AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”.

Air pollution is estimated to be the cause of death of around 2 million people every year in India. It is the fifth biggest cause of death in India. India has the world's highest death rate from chronic respiratory diseases and asthma, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The World Health Organization also said that children are more susceptible to air pollution-related diseases.
