Cyclone Biparjoy: From location to severity, all you need to know
Cyclone Biparjoy, which means calamity or disaster, is now centred about 900 km southwest of Mumbai. The Met department said it would intensify further and move north-northwestwards”.
Cyclone Biparjoy, which formed over the Arabian Sea, has turned into a very severe cyclonic storm and is expected to intensify further in the coming days. The cyclonic storm has led to harsh weather and sea conditions that can increase the wind speed to 135-145 kmph in the next three to four days. With the storm centered near Porbandar, the Gujarat government has said that it is prepared to handle any situation.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in a statement, informed about a cyclonic circulation over southeast Arabian Sea on June 5. They had said that the storm may result in a low-pressure area in the region. IMD predicted that the cyclone was likely to move northwards and “intensify into a depression over Southeast & adjoining Eastcentral Arabian Sea during subsequent 48 hours”.

A day later, the Met confirmed that a depression was formed which lay 920 km West-south-west (WSW) of Goa and 1120 km south-southwest wind (SSW) of Mumbai. The depression was “likely to move nearly northwards and intensify into a CS during next 24 hours”.
Cyclonic storm Biparjoy was formed over the east-central Arabian Sea on June 6 and was found to be 900 km west-southwest of Goa. It intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on June 7 and was located around 890 km west-southwest of Goa. The storm had intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm and lay centered about 860 km west-southwest of Goa, 970 km southwest of Mumbai, and 1050 south-southwest of Porbandar.
In the latest update on the Biparjoy cyclone, the IMD said that it “lay centered at 5:30 am on June 8, near latitude 13.9N & long 66.0E, about 860km west-southwest of Goa, 910km southwest of Mumbai, would intensify further & move north-northwestwards”.
The name of the cyclone has been given by Bangladesh. Biparjoy means calamity or disaster.
