Earlier in the tournament, the Indian team had defeated Pakistan by 89 runs (D/L method) in Manchester. Inspired by Rohit Sharma's century, the Indian team had put up a strong total batting first. Chasing 337 to win, Pakistan were cruising at 117-1 after 21 overs before double strikes from Kuldeep and Hardik Pandya reduced them to 129-5 and all but broke the back of Pakistan’s resistance.

While Pakistan were eventually knocked out of the group stage, India made it to the semifinal where they lost to New Zealand by 18 runs on Wednesday. The final of the World Cup will be played between the Blackcaps and hosts England who defeated Australia in the second semi-final.
