Covid 19 vaccine targetted at this goal

In the regular press briefing of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr Balram Bhargava has said that vaccination would depend on the efficacy of the vaccine and the purpose is to break the chain of Covid 19 transmission. If we're able to vaccinate critical mass of people and break virus transmission, then we may not have to vaccinate the entire population.

He further emphasised on the importance of face masks that would be important even after the vaccination is done. “Because we are starting with a small population at a time and therefore the ask will be protective and it should be continued to be used so as to help in breaking the chain of viral transmission,” Bhargava said.

Covid-19 vaccine side-effects?

The government has rejected the impact on the timeline or delays of the Covid-19 vaccine after reports emerged of a 40-year-old man, who took part in the 'Covishield' vaccine trial in Chennai, alleged side effects.

According to a PTI report, this man has alleged side effects including a virtual neurological breakdown and impairment of cognitive functions and has sought Rs 5 crore compensation in a legal notice to Serum Institute and others, besides seeking a halt to the trial.

The health secretary has said that there will be no impact on the timeline of the vaccine. Bhushan said that whenever a volunteer takes part in a clinical trial, he signs a consent document. This is the practice adopted, world over, he said. The form says that the vaccine may have some side effects, he further said.
