Sputnik Light Vaccine in India: In a recent development, the Indian drug regulatory body has denied permission to Dr. Reddy's to conduct phase 3 trails for Sputnik Light COVID-19 vaccine in India.

News agency ANI has reported about this development. ANI has tweeted from its official Twitter handle, "Indian drug regulatory body has denied permission to Dr Reddy’s to conduct phase 3 trials for Sputnik light in India: Sources." 

 

An ANI report on June 2, 2021 stated that there is the possibility of a speedy launch of single-dose Russian Sputnik Light COVID-19 vaccine in India. The report also informed that according to sources Dr. Reddy's were in talks with the Indian government to bring the Russian Sputnik Light COVID-19 vaccine to India. 

According to the ANI report, Sputnik Light has already been approved and trails have started in some other countries. 28 days after vaccination, Sputnik Light vaccine was 79.4 per cent effective against COVID-19. The trails were focused only on Russians who were not administered the second dose. The phase 3 trials involved 7000 people and were conducted in Russia, UAE and Ghana. 

It has to be noted that the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine is now available in India. In an ANI report on June 28, 2021, Arun Kumar, Medical Director of Jay Prabha Medanta Hospital, Patna said that their hospital is using Sputnik V for COVID-19 vaccination. 

While speaking to ANI, he informed, "We are using Sputnik for vaccination due to its efficacy which is 92 per cent as per scientific reports. " He further stated that the hospital had initially ordered for 600 doses but due to good public response, it ran out of the doses within three days. Kumar said that the hospital has placed an order of 2000 to 3000 more doses of Sputnik V. 

Speaking of the COVID-19 vaccination scenario in India, as per the data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India's COVID-19 vaccination coverage has increased to 33.57 crore.
