The IMD has sounded a yellow alert and predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The cyclonic circulation lies now over coastal Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood and extends upto 7.6 km above mean sea level, it said.

Chennai and other districts are experiencing heavy rainfall since the northeast monsoon hit the state on October 29.

"Northeasterly winds continue to persist along and off North Tamil Nadu and adjoining coastal areas of South CAP," IMD said in a release.  

Chennai Rains Death Toll 

Earlier on Tuesday, two people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Chennai amid the heavy showers. A 47-year-old Shanthi died after a portion of the wall from the balcony of her house fell on her on Tuesday. In another incident, autorickshaw driver, Devendran was electrocuted to death after he came into contact with a live wire in Vyasarpadi, an IANS report said.

"Chief Minister M.K. Stalin after a high-level meeting of ministers and Officials said that the state may get 35 to 75 percent more rain. He also said that the storage levels in 43 dams reached 75 to 100 per cent of the capacity, while in 17 other dams , the storage level is between 50 to 75 per cent," an IANS report said.

IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall in Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala for the next 4 days.

With rains increasing in strength, the State Disaster Response Force has been kept ready for any eventuality.
