Budget session: Revised Parliament canteen rate from today - check prices of biryani, chapati, boiled vegetables and more

The government has decided to do away with the subsidy on Parliament canteen food. The revised prices will come into effect from today - Budget session of Parliament started today. The decision was announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Birla had also said the Parliament canteens will now be run by ITDC instead of Northern Railway. The move is expected to save over Rs 8 crore.  

With subsidy on food being removed, the food will significantly get dearer in the Parliament canteen. As per the new prices in the Parliament canteen, a vegetarian buffet will cost Rs 500, whereas the cost for a non-vegetarian buffet has been hiked to Rs 700. The cheapest item on the menu in the Parliament canteen is a chapati, which costs Rs 3 each, while Non-veg buffet is the most expensive item on the list.

Among other popular dishes, Hyderabadi Mutton Biryani that used to cost Rs 65 is now priced at Rs 150, while boiled vegetables are being sold at Rs 50 as opposed to the previous rate of Rs 12.

Earlier on January 27, news agency IANS has informed about ITDC taking over the Parliament canteen. " Taking over the reins of the #Parliament canteen and ending the 52-year legacy of Northern Railways, the ITDC will serve food cooked by expert chefs of the five-star Ashok Hotel to the MPs and others from the upcoming #Budget Session," it wrote.

"The vegetarian platter one enjoys in Ashok Hotel will be manifold cheaper in the #Parliamentcanteen. The cost will be Rs 100 for "kadai paneer, mix veg dry, bhaji, dal sultani, peas pulao, chapati, green salad, cucumber mint raita, papad and kala jamun," IANS had wrote on micro blogging website Twitter.
