What comes as a relief is the fact that Indian Railways allows you to check your PNR status through SMS on your phone. The PNR number is a ten-digit unique number which is provided against every booked ticket by the Indian Railways. It informs you whether the ticket is confirmed, waitlisted or cancelled.

- Type 'PNR' in a new window
- Send this SMS to 139
- You will receive a message with all the details about your journey

The Indian Railways charges Rs 3 for each enquiry.

Steps against coronavirus

Indian Railways has taken several steps to fight the coronavirus outbreak including the screening of passengers on running trains. According to Railway Ministry officials, the national transporter officials have started the screening of passengers inside the trains in Thiruvanathpuram. The official said that the work of screening the passengers with thermal devices have been started with the help of state government.

It has also cancelled as many as 23 trains due to spread of coronavirus and non-occupancy of trains. The cancelled trains include Nizamuddin-CSMT Rajdhani Express, Nagpur-Mumbai Nandigram Express and Mumbai-Pune Deccan Express, among others.
