Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) has conducted raids on Metro Cash and Carry stores located in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The raids were conducted under a special operation as the stores were selling non-ISI marked toys.
The raids were conducted in cities including Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai between 13 and 17 January.

The BIS officials conducted raids at a Borivali Metro Cash and Carry store. The raid was conducted on 13 January. In the raids, a large number of toys without mandatory ISI markings were found.
The toys were being sold without adhering to quality control orders. The team also confiscated unmarked toys in large quantities.
The standards prescribed by the central government were being violated. The store was found to be selling non ISI marked electronic and non-electronic toys. The orders have been issued to confiscate the unmarked toys.
BIS raids toy-shop in Goregaon West, confiscates uncertified toys
BIS Mumbai also conducted raids at Hamleys in Goregaon. The raids were conducted at a shop in Oberoi mall. The store was found to be selling non ISI marked electronic and non-electronic toys. A large number of toys were recovered without adequate certificates.
Similarly, raids were conducted in Ahmedabad and Surat. The raids were conducted at a shop Ding Dong Ramkada Ghar located on the Gurukul road in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, in Surat it was Saffaire Business Hub at Madhuram circle.
Extant Rules
The Industry and Commerce Ministry had made it mandatory from 1 January 2021 for companies to put ISI mark on all toys meant for children of 14 years and above.
Any businessman violating the norm is liable for action under BIS rules. The punishment could be up to a two-year imprisonment or a penalty of Rs 2 lakh.
The toy makers are required to take a prior approval from BIS before using the ISI mark. Many businessmen have been flouting the norms and using the ISI mark without prior permission. This is also a punishable offence.
