Bharti Airtel will soon shutdown its digital TV broadcast service IPTV from August 31 this year, Aseem Manchanda reports.

The company has sent notice to its customers stating it will close its IPTV services, sources told.  Airtel IPTV keeps seven days of TV programmes recorded for the users, so they can enjoy their favourite shows whenever they want. It also comprises of pause and rewind live programmes thus firmly puts the TV under users control.

Airtel spokesperson said, “As a strategy, we have decided to focus on one TV service offering in our portfolio. Airtel Digital TV, our DTH offering, is a natural choice given the scalability of the business and the innovations we can offer to our customers. We are offering our IPTV customers an upgrade to Airtel Digital TV and providing them a complimentary HD USB set top box along with one 8 GB pen drive to record/re-visit their favorite shows.”

Bharti Airtel had launched the IPTV service in 2009.

At 10:53 hours, the stock of Bharti Airtel was trading up 0.56% or Rs 1.95 at Rs 349.80 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
