Big debit, credit card cloning fraud nailed! GIP Mall Noida Burger King employee in jail - Here is how you can avoid this
Use your other hand while putting the PIN while transacting at retail shops while making your payment.
The local police has recently unearthed a card cloning fraud in Noida's GIP mall. The culprit used to work at the Burger King store and had fixed a skimming device into the POS (Point of Sale) machine that the majority of the retailers use. Once the skimmer was fixed, the card cloning mole at the Burger King used to fish out the PIN number by using the CCTV footage and used to sell the card details to a card cloning racket for Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per week. The local police could nab the culprit at Burger King after HDFC bank, in its internal inquiry found that majority of complaints in the recent times were from Burger King at GIP mall.
Cybercrime expert Pavan Dugggal told Zee Business Online that these types of frauds happen when card users become careless. "Use of skimming device by the card cloners at various retail shops are not new. But, the crime happens when the card user becomes careless. Here also the card user is well aware that the CCTV is being installed everywhere in the mall and the retail shop but still he or she is not ready to hide its PIN," he said.
Duggal, who is president at the cyberlaw.net added, "Awareness is the answer to all those victims who lost their hard-earned money to the card cloning racket. When someone puts PIN number of his or her plastic card, he or she can use the other hand to cover the upper portion of the POS so that your PIN number remains secured even when there is a skimming device being installed at the POS."
He said that CCTV footage can help the fraudsters to fish out the PIN you are using while doing the money transaction. So, better to remain aware than to complain after losing money.
In reply to Zee Business Online's e-mail, a Burger King Spokesperson wrote, “We have come across an incident at our restaurant in GIP Mall Noida involving one of our employees engaging in some fraudulent activities. We have taken immediate action of informing the police and the concerned employee is now in police custody for questioning. We are fully co-operating with the authorities and are committed to resolve the issue at the earliest and get the concerned person to face the law.”
