Aviation: Flyers alert! Forget your boarding pass, just put your best face forward at these airports

Massive changes in Indian aviation in offing! Flyers will soon get the opportunity to have a hassle free travel experience as they will no longer have to spend hours in completing formalities related to getting a boarding pass and other security clearances. Why is that? Thank new technology for the favour! Many airports will be introducing automated facial recognition system during the boarding process, and travellers will get security clearance by simply looking into a camera, says a report.
 
Under the Prime Minister Narendra's Digi Yatra initiative, this process will be installed at the four PPP metro airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, said Times of India report.  A source told TOI, “This process under digiyatra (DY) will be rolled out at out at the four AAI airports in the next five to six months. The others shortlisted will get the system soon thereafter. Later on, other airports will follow suit.” said a source. 

Earlier, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had chosen three airports, including Varanasi, Vijayawada and Kolkata, to implement a biometric access system for passenger boarding process. However in June, reports came in that Varanasi airport would become the first airport to have this automated system for passenger boarding process.
 
Notably, the automated camera will scan the passenger's face and verify his/ her credentials and will give security clearance. This will save time of passengers who will not have to wait at the security gate waiting for the clearance. 
 
Three airports will reportedly have the biometric access system project on a pilot basis, as they were chosen under PM Modi's Digi Yatra initiative, wherein, passengers Aadhaar details could be used for biometric-enabled boarding process.
 
Last month, Bangalore International Airport Limited had tied up with a technical service provider for this purpose, stating “Biometric technology will identify passengers by their face face as they move across the airport, avoiding stops and the repeated presentation of boarding passes, passports or other physical identity documents.” 

Under the Digi Yatra initiative, the Civil Aviation Ministry is said to have planned to make boarding pass and security check-in digital.

Notably, the idea behind this initiative is to securely identify travellers through Aadhaar number, passport or other documents.
