Assembly Election Dates 2021 Announced - 5 noteworthy changes by Election Commission for polls in 4 states and 1 UT - West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry

Even as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora has announced the Assembly election 2021 dates for the 4 states and one Union territory, going to polls, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry, there are some things that have changed keeping in view the corona pandemic. The intent is to keep the electorate as well as the candidates safe and prevent the further spread of this killer virus. Here are the changes announced for Assembly Election 2021:

1. Door-to-door campaigning to be restricted to five persons including candidate, but road shows can be held.

2. Webcasting arrangement in place at polling stations in critical and vulnerable areas

3. All poll officials will be vaccinated against COVID-19 before elections for five assemblies.

4. Arrangements to be in place for candidates to file nominations online for five assembly polls

5. Voting to be allowed for an extra one hour

During the press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said that nearly 18.68 crore electors will be eligible to vote at 2.7 lakh polling stations for 824 seats. He added that voting will take place for 126 seats in Assam, 234 in Tamil Nadu, 294 in West Bengal, 140 in Kerala, 30 in Puducherry.

Arora also said that adequate CAPF deployment will be ensured for assembly polls; critical, vulnerable areas identified and advance teams already deployed.
