In a order to broaden the use of unique identification programme, the government soon likely to make Aadhaar cards mandatory for new driving licence along with renewal of the licence, a media report said.

Modi-led government may soon ask the states to make Aadhaar number necessary for the permit. The new rule will come into effect from October, 2017, as reported by Time of India. 

As per the report, the centre will be taking the decision in order to prevent the multiple issue of driving licence. 

Till now, RTO (Regional Transport Offices) have to check manully to verify identity of an applicant. Which means, they cannot check if the person has multiple licence from another RTO. 

"Aadhaar will be a single document which will be enough to establish the identity of the applicant. If anyone does not have it, then he/she has to submit several other documents. We are making the necessary changes and incorporating provisions to enable RTOs to record these details," TOI quoted a source as saying.

Moreover, according to the report, the government can only advise to state for adopting certain practices, hence, the issuance of driving licence is a state subject. 

Last week, the government took various decisions related to expansion of Aadhaar card use. On Friday, Ministry of Communications and Department of Telecommunications announced that all telecom companies will have to re-verify subscribers with Aadhaar based e-KYC process.

Supreme Court on February 2 passed an order making it mandatory for all telecom subscribers to once again be re-verified through their Aadhaar card.

Further, on Tuesday, the government has made the Aadhaar card mandatory to file for income tax returns and also to apply for a permanent account number (PAN).
