Aapki Khabar Aapka Fayada: Unhappy over government's service charge directive, NRAI plans to challenge order
The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) is challenging the directive of the government that no hotel can forcibly collect the service charge from the customer.
Aapki Khabar Aapka Fayada: The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) is challenging the directive of the government that no hotel can forcibly collect the service charge from the customer. Its argument is that when the online railway and air tickets are charging service charges from every passenger then, why is the hotel industry being targeted with all the rules and regulations.
According to NRAI, a service charge is a contract between the customer and the hotelier. The government should not interfere in this. The hotel industry also said that they show the service charge on the menu card and share this money with their staff.
As you all know Zee Business never lags behind in raising its voice on issues related to the interests of the consumers. Earlier, it has raised its voice against extortionate charges by hoteliers. And now the issue of convenience fee has been raised on railway and air tickets.
It has to be noted that IRCTC charges a convenience fee of Rs 15 for non-AC and Rs 30 for AC tickets. But this is just what IRCTC earned. Still, it can be questioned. Whereas in air tickets, money is taken from the passengers in the name of user development fees, passenger service fees, and aviation fees.
It is important to know that under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), Rs 50 is charged to every air traveler on every flight. It is used for the development of those airports which come under their served or underserved areas. Apart from this, passenger service charges up to Rs 236 are levied at the airport for the convenience of the passengers. This is also a type of service charge which is collected from the consumer without his consent.
Zee Business believes that the government needs to bring a uniform law regarding service charges, in which the consumer knows how much money is being taken for which item, even if it is in the form of a service charge.
