Aadhaar-PAN link Alert! Do this before last date or your card will be cancelled; massive penalty slapped on you
The Aadhaar-PAN linking circular released on February 13 says that any taxpayer who was issued a permanent account number as on the 1st day of July, 2017 is required to link it with the Aadhaar card, as per rule 114AA of the income tax.
Aadhaar-PAN linking alert: According to income tax rules, if Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) is not linked with Aadhaar card by 31st March 2020, then your PAN will become inoperative and secondly, the PAN holder will have to pay the penalty of Rs 10000 if the cancelled card is used.

What will happen on using cancelled PAN?
If PAN Aadhaar link is not done and the PAN card is cancelled, it can still be made operative even after the cancellation. But in between if anybody tries to use a cancelled PAN card then it will be considered as a violation of 272B of the Income Tax Act and you may be subjected to a Rs 10000 penalty.
Steps to check your Aadhaar-PAN linking status:
To check whether your PAN card is already linked with the Aadhaar card, log on to the official website of the income tax department - incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
How to link Aadhaar-PAN:
1. To link the two, you need to click on 'Link Aadhaar'option on the website ie, incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
2. You will be redirected to a new page where you need to fill all information like your PAN Card number, Aadhaar number and your updated details such as name, DOB etc.
Aadhaar-PAN linking through message:
If you are unable to link your PAN with Aadhaar by logging in at the income tax website, you can do this through a simple SMS as well.
1. You just need to send SMS on 567678 or 56161. Format of the SMS is UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><SPACE><10 digit PAN>.
