7th Pay Commission news is being eagerly awaited even as bad happenings keep blighting the chance of an announcement of higher fitment factor hike for government employees. However, even as 7th Pay Commission salary hike by 3.68 pct fitment factor hangs fire, Centre has gone ahead and hiked the dearness allowance of central government employees and pensioners by as much as 2 per cent. This will certainly bring cheer even as very dark clouds hang over the heads of these employees. NDTV said it would affect 5 mn central government employees and over 6 mn pensioners.

Reportedly, the current scams in banks, which have hit Rs 11,400 cr just in Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, may become a big factor in the Narendra Modi government opting not to hike 7th CPC based minimum salaries to Rs 26,000 as demanded by the staff. Be that 7th Pay Commission news as it may, today's hike in dearness allowance has come in as a pleasant surprise. 

Notably,  in Jammu and Kashmir, the CM Mehbooba Mufti led government on January 25 had hiked dearness allowance (DA) for state government employees and pensioners by as much as 3 per cent. The same was effective from July 2017. On January 11, 2018 Jammu and Kashmir had also announced implementation of 7th Pay Commission recommendations for state government employees then.
